Running To Faith

Enjoying the Journey
Inspiring others to find spiritual and athletic contentment through faith in Jesus Christ

This is my story as a runner and athlete related to my growth in Christian faith over my lifetime. A narrative recounting thousands of miles logged running and the correlation of finding faith in everyday life. Hoping to inspire others to re-think their outlook on life and give thanks for each moment of our lives. 2013 Tri My journey has taken me from life as an average athlete and casual Christian, through the many experiences, accomplishing far more than ever thought possible in both areas. Most importantly, the underlying message is to not only seek to achieve these goals but to remember to treasure the experiences along the way. Providing relatable life changing experiences as an athlete and Christian. My experiences have helped me get the most out of life by learning to deal with conflict and hardships and appreciate things most of us take for granted. Most importantly the underlying message is to not only seek to achieve these goals but to remember to treasure the experiences along the way. Eastern Michigan University mid 1970s I come from the baby boomer generation of the 50s growing up in a simple middle class environment. Over my lifetime I have logged over 115,000 running miles – enough to circle the earth five times. I’ve had both national and local sponsorships and attracted media attention including being featured on Wide World of Sports, ESPN, WJR and CBS 62. I progressed from an average high school runner to a two-time All-American in the mile run and captain of my nationally ranked college track and cross country teams, with a personal best of 4:01 in the mile. I’ve raced against, beaten, and became friends with, Olympians and World Record holders such as Marty Liquori, Rod Dixon, Dick Quax, Steve Scott, Greg Meyer, Herb Lindsay, Eamonn Cohhlin, Paul Cummings, Wilson Waigwa and Steve Placencia, to name a few. Later in life the transition to road racing resulted in a sub 30 minute 10k, sub 14 minute 5k and 2:29 marathon. I’ve continued to be an active member of the running community for over 40 years through memberships on running teams, trail relay and events, and family running events. Through running experiences I’ve established relationships with thousands of friends and dozens of close companions. As I continue to age I continue to seek out new adventures that have renewed my energy in sports, the latest by doing triathlons. My journey includes growth as a Christian from a traditional parochial school upbringing in the 60s to a life that revolves around our savior Jesus Christ. After 40+ years of attending Sunday Service I have pursued being an everyday Christian through small groups, volunteer work, daily prayer, and studying of the bible. About ME

One man’s experiences that have led him to both athletic and spiritual contentment

Jim Deren

Run2Faith is a narrative account of one man’s experiences that have led him to both athletic and spiritual contentment. As a lifelong competitive runner who has set many records and won many races, the author found that the satisfaction gained from hitting his goals were short lived as he quickly reset his goals to achieve even more. His sense of happiness and achievement of contentment occurred when he stopped to realize that his journey and experiences toward those goals was the true reward. Similarly, his spiritual contentment was continually hindered by the ingrained sinful nature of man who despite his attempts to keep all of Gods wishes continued to falter. True contentment occurred when he decided to embrace Jesus Christ as his savior and understanding that only through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross is eternal happiness gained.
